We want every visitor to be able to take part in the fort's story. Here is an honest look at the grounds and the help we can offer.

Terrain and grounds
The fort is a historic, outdoor site on the riverfront, and the ground reflects that. Pathways and open areas can be uneven, with grass, gravel, and packed earth in places. The reconstructed buildings are interpreted as they were built, so some entries have a raised threshold or a step, and a few interior spaces are tight. Most of the grounds can be reached on a level route, and our staff are glad to guide you along the easiest path and to let you know in advance which spaces have steps.
Sturdy, flat shoes are a good idea, and we recommend visiting with a companion if uneven ground is difficult for you. If you use a wheelchair or a mobility device, please call before you come so we can talk through the route and meet you at the most accessible point.
Accessible parking
Accessible parking is available near the fort entrance along the riverfront. If you are arriving with a group or by bus and need a close drop-off point, call ahead at 319-470-3642 and we will direct your driver.
Restrooms
Accessible restrooms are available on the grounds during open hours. If you have a specific need, let us know when you call and we will confirm what is available on the day you plan to visit.
Service animals
Service animals are welcome throughout the grounds and the buildings. There is open space and water nearby if your animal needs a break during the visit.

The more we know in advance, the better we can prepare, whether that means a seated tour, a quieter time of day, or a hand across the grounds.
